The Forensic Odontology and Human Rights (AFOHR) is a non-profit entity incorporated under Italian law, dedicated to leveraging humanitarian forensic odontology to advance human rights.

The association also actively advocates for policies that ensure respectful treatment of deceased individuals, influencing policy at multiple levels. Among these initiatives the Declaration of Turin on "humanitarian forensic odontology" adopted in 2023 during the 2nd AFHOR Biennial Symposium, available here.

AFOHR has rapidly evolved into a significant force within the field of forensic odontology. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2025, AFOHR remains committed to its foundational mission of ensuring that forensic odontology's tools and techniques are employed to uphold dignity and justice for deceased individuals who cannot speak for themselves.

AFOHR is invested in educational initiatives, training professionals in forensic odontology and promoting ethical practices within the field, thanks also to the presence of various other disciplines represented in the association, like forensic pathology, anthropology, and fingerprinting.

I first presented the need for promoting human rights in the recovery and identification of missing and unidentified at the 6th International Dental Ethics and Law Society (IDEALS) Congress 2012 Leuven (Belgium), inspired by my mentor prof. John G. Clement.

This idea gave birth to the group FO4HR-dentifyme on the 5th May 2015 during the Interpol DVI meeting in Lyon (France), which then evolved into a volunteering association in 2016. Since its inception, AFOHR has grown to include 100 members from 30 different countries, each dedicated to the ethical application of forensic science in the service of human rights.

The association seeks to expand its impact and supports global initiatives by offering its expertise pro bono for forensic odontology consultations related to any emergency involving human identification. AFOHR also provides remote and onsite training to civil protection units, NGOs, and law enforcement agencies engaged in the human identification process.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bali for a symposium that promises to be as impactful as it is informative. Together, we will explore innovative solutions and foster global partnerships in the spirit of advancing forensic science and humanitarian efforts worldwide.

"Where Science Speaks for Silent"

In a world where truth is often buried in silence, it is power of forensic science that gives voice to voiceless, justice to wronged, and clarity to uncertain. It is with great honor and purpose that I welcome you to the 16th IASR International Conference on Forensic Science.

Let this conference not only be a forum for scientific exchange but a catalyst for global collaboration, empathy-driven research, and fearless advocacy. I urge each of you to engage deeply, question openly, and imagine boldly.
